A Q&A WITH HAVEN BROWN

How did you get into event planning?
It was a very natural thing for me from a very early age to always be the planner and organizer of everything I could.
I will admit that where I'm from, the idea of being an event planner isn't really a career option.
So, it took me a while as an adult to realize my passion for planning could be a sustainable career.
After some deep soul searching and wanting to find that dream job, I realized my calling to be an event and wedding planner.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Everywhere! Mostly from my clients. I love getting to know them, lighting that spark inside them, and brainstorming ways to showcase what they love and want to represent.
I'm always keeping a little secret file of amazing ideas and just waiting for the right event to come along to share them with. We're so lucky here at Infinity to be surrounded by amazing talent. We work together and share visions and ideas. Building on each other's ideas definitely gives us a leg up. Not only do we get to come up with the ideas, but we get to improve upon them and go above and beyond even our own expectations.
How do you stay on top of everything?
Calendars and checklists (with a checklist to make sure you did each checklist). Repetition. I can't count the number of times I go over each event with a fine tooth comb.
Any organizational tips or tricks?
Event planning is usually a marathon and not a sprint. Just because you think you'll remember to follow up on that appointment in 3 months doesn't mean you will. Use a calendar to set deadlines and stick to them. Make sure you have reminders on your calendar about upcoming deadlines for both you and your clients.
What unique detail has been one of your favorites from one of your events?
We created a custom lighting fixture for an event, and it was amazing. When I say "created" I mean it. Our AV Director, myself and another event specialist had a crafting night and literally made them with our bare hands. Being able to bring the vision board to life in such a hands on way really keeps you invested in the project. Every detail from that engagement party was amazing!
Do you have a favorite memory?
There are so many its impossible to choose. Amazing things happen everyday. The best part of a wedding for me is when they come back down the aisle as Mr. & Mrs. for the first time. I get to give them a big hug and congratulate them first. It's a special moment for them and I always feel privileged to be there.
If you could give one piece of advice to couples planning a wedding what would it be?
Speak up and be flexible and willing to compromise. Weddings are highly emotional for everyone involved which can be distracting from the tasks at hand. Be honest with each other and offer an opinion (and it's okay to honestly not have an opinion too). If your opinions are different this where the flexibility and compromise comes in.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
I love that everyday is different and challenging. I never have to live the same day twice and get to be a part of peoples lives in a truly unique and profound way.
Plus, our amazing team. Everyone cares on a deep personal level that every event is flawless. Even though most guests and clients may not see all they are doing behind the scenes, I promise you everyone from the guys prepping your dinner to the team building our custom rental furniture is checking in and making sure that everything that can be done to make it perfect is being done. That is what warms my heart at the end of a long day.
